So Chicago might get the 2016 Olympics…

April 14, 2007 · 3 Comments

So the great city of Chicago seems to want to get the 2016 Olympic nod from the IOC. Yay! I hope they get it. The city should get great revenue, exploding tourism, and a global spotlight those few days. However, if done right, not just Chicago can come out a winner that year.

Being a resident of a suburb of Milwaukee, Wisconsin most of my life, I have seen the up and down of a metropolis in the shadows of the great Chicago-land area. In many ways, Chicago is the New York of the Midwest: Large, intimidating skyline, and big lights. Milwaukee, on the other hand, has always been like the Philadelphia of the Midwest: In New York’s shadow, full of crime and other problems, and constantly battling for respect. Unfortunately, the past 5 years has seen a steep rise of homicide, robberies, gang violence, and general fear in Milwaukee. Perhaps this announcement can be a motivation for change.

Not only will the announcement mean an overall attempt by the region at large to “look better” in the next 9 years, the cost of living will probably rise. Chicago is already becoming an expensive place to live, mirroring New York. With the Olympics possibly coming and a proposed new stadium being built along with road construction and rising property value, some people may not be able to stay in Chicago and will look for a close alternative. This is where Milwaukee, a short hour and a half drive to the north, should step in. Not only can Miltown take advantage of the possible influx of residents by building more “reasonably-priced” apartments, but also not focus on building the condos that have been exploding in the area as of late. The apartments have to be attractive to middle-class families. There is so much unused factory space and open dirt mounds just waiting to be used. Also, there needs to be more of an emphasis on commercial growth. I’m sure companies will be flooding to Chicago in reaction to this possible decision, especially construction companies, and so on. Not all of these companies will be able to locate in the Chicago city limits. Some may need to come up north and take advantage of another metropolis close to Chicago.

Maybe I have wishful thinking but I seriously believe that other areas can also win with the announcement that Chicago might be hosting the 2016 Olympic Games. Living in the Milwaukee Metro area, I personally hope that Milwaukee will step up to the plate and became better off because of it.

Acrostic of Milwaukee

April 8, 2007 · Leave a Comment

I made an acrostic on my city of residence, Milwaukee Wisconsin

Midwest town, all turned around

Inside the walls, suffering and strife

Lake Michigan breeze, waving pine trees,

Wonderful to see for tourists, those three.

Against all odds, we culturally grow

Under the sheets, the cover is blown.

Killings, beatings, a rape, nothing new.

Everywhere you go, despair is frightful

Everyone you know, never will be right though.

Meditation

April 7, 2007 · Leave a Comment

I’m going to start going back into what I used to do as a kid and what I got away from over the past couple years: meditation.  I used to use meditation as a coping mechanism. It calmed me. Got me through my day. But ever since I went to college, I stopped doing it (and many other things) and went into the engineering mode. No sleep. Party. and I forgot about that method.  I want to get back into it because it really was a way that I got through a lot of my childhood and I made the mistake of thinking that adulthood would be different. Which it wasn’t.

Lightning!

April 3, 2007 · 1 Comment

Lightning is so damn random. You have no idea where it’s gonna go.  It’s crazy, it’s kind of like electrical craziness all wrapped up into the atmosphere.  But I have a phobia of storms which doesn’t help me =(

Wrestlemania Review

April 2, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Here is my very excited review of Wrestlemania 23 from Sunday

1st Match: MITB won by Mr. Kennedy: Oh man. What a match. A giant spot fest as predicted but it was performed so well. It started off with the traditional stare downs on top of the ladder with Edge going up first. Then it went into a spot frenzy with everyone doing their trademark moves. A RKO off the ladder. A celtic cross onto a ladder. A book-end off a ladder. A freakin Lambeau Leap to Hornswaggle off the large ladder and easily the best spot I’ve seen in years: a leg drop by Jeff Hardy off the tallest of the ladders in the ring to Edge on top of a ladder outside the ring. The ladder broke in half. I’m sure Edge broke in half. I applaud them both for taking that bump. In the end, it was the heavy favorites: Kennedy and CM Punk battling off in the finals. It ended well with Kennedy outsmarting the face Punk and winning. I applaud his effort and I know he will take this win and run with it since he’s truly passionate about the sport. 4 stars

2nd match: MVP vs Chris Benoit for US Championship: A great technical match up. MVP proved he can handle working with a great mat wrestler in the biggest match of his career. He really came out the best in this match and I think that was the whole point of the match in the first place. So good job by Benoit putting him over. 3 stars
3rd match: Great Khalil vs Kane-Eh. Not a stellar match but it worked for what it was. The best part of the match easily was Kane slamming Khalil ala Hogan slamming Andre at WMIII. A moment to remember but otherwise a match to forget. 2 stars

4th match: Batista vs the Undertaker for the WHC-They really tried to steal the night and almost did. The match was awesome. Easily Batista’s best match in years and Undertaker was his usual awesomeness. The entrance by Undertaker was breathtaking per usual and the moment where he was standing in the doorway with his shadow sent shivers down my spine. A solid match with great psychology, and an awesome spot with Batista powerslamming Undertaker into the announcer table and close-falls all over. In the end, Batista got Tombstone-d and Undertaker is 15-0 and champion. Awesome. But it wasn’t the last match which pissed me off. 4 stars

5th match: The New Breed vs the ECW Originals- badly booked matches shouldn’t happen at Wrestlemania, especially after well-booked feuds. This was a horrible match but to be expected since only one of the participants had been in Wrestlemania previously(RVD). It’s good that the Originals won and even better that RVD got a pin but I (and I’m sure a lot of people) would have wished for a better match. Didn’t help that the crowd was dead for it either. 1 and a half stars

6th match: Hair vs Hair Battle of the Billionaires: Bobby Lashley vs Umaga-If I could rate this match with entertainment included, I’d give it a 3 and a half but I can’t and the match sucked. It was anti-climatic considering I knew Lashley would win. But the Trump takedown of Vince was funny. Austin, in general, carried the match with his antics. Pulling Lashley and Umaga away. Stunning Vince after the match. Stunning Trump after the match which made me MTFO. And shaving Vince bald. Vince sold it well too. 2 stars for the match, 3 and a half including entertainment.

7th match: Melina Perez vs Ashley Massaro for the WWE Women’s Championship-Possibly the worst women’s Wrestlemania match I’ve seen in years. It was horrible. Melina is a solid worker but Ashley is horrrrrrrrrrrible. Ugh. And the lumber-jills served no purpose but rushing in for a pointless catfight afterwards. Just horrible. I hope Ashley never wrestles again. DUD

8th and final match: HBK vs John Cena for the WWE Championship: Even though I gripe that this should have not been the last match considering Undertaker won the Royal Rumble, is the most popular wrestler, and had a better match imo, I understand why this was last. A really meh entrance by Cena, breaking through glass with a muscle car. HBK looked great wrestling-wise, I wanted him to win so bad in mark terms. They both put their hearts into the match. The pile-driver on the stairs was awesome. The countless reversals into the f-u, scm, and stfu were awesome. The psychology was awesome. The showdowns were awesome. HBK tapping out…was not awesome. I’d rather him be pinned then tap out to a horrible submission he just broke out of earlier. It cheapened the victory in my eyes. The crowd was almost dead when he won. Great match, not the best ending. 3 and a half stars

Overall, it was a better pay-per-view live then it was on paper. People poured their hearts out in the main events. It was epic but not perfect.
